The IRS and state track the payer by the payer's Tax Identification Number TIN. The state identification number in box 16 is not required to file your tax return. However, TurboTax requires an entry to continue with your tax preparation. You will just enter your state TIN, up to 14 numbers, this will allow you to continue with your tax return.
