Tennessee taxes only interest and dividend income less allowable exemptions. Part-year residents and nonresidents include taxable interest and dividend income earned while residing in Tennessee.
Residents
Individuals are required to file if their taxable interest and dividend income exceeds $1,250 ($2,500 MFJ).
Part-year residents
Individuals are required to file if their taxable interest and dividend income while a resident exceeds $1,250 ($2,500 MFJ).
Nonresidents
Individuals are required to file if:
• They maintained a residence in Tennessee for more than six months, and
• Their taxable interest and dividend income exceeds $1,250 ($2,500 MFJ).
Military personnel and full-time students having legal domicile in another state are not required to file.
Exception: Residents, part-year and nonresidents who are age 65 or over with total income of $37,000 ($68,000 MFJ) or less are exempt.
