In some cases, a dependent doesn't change your tax return. The Tax Reform passed in 2018 did away with exemptions, so you don't always get a benefit from claiming a dependent. 

 

If your dependent is your child under 17, your refund would change a lot because you would lose the Child Tax Credit. 

 

But if you are claiming you sister, who had no job and lived with you all year, that would not change your refund because you would not get any credits for claiming her.
