Get your taxes done using TurboTax
A change in tax law very late in the year changed the way previously taxable distributions are handled for some taxpayers.
If you are getting the message that you cannot file because of this tax law change AND if your distribution from a Coverdell ESA or 529 College Savings plan was used only for qualifying education expenses, you are not affected by this change and you should remove Form 1099-Q from TurboTax and file your tax return.
The IRS does not require the form to be included on a tax return unless there are taxable distributions.
To remove the form:
- Login to your account at TurboTax.com.
- Click on the Search Tool (magnifying glass) in the upper right of TurboTax.
- Enter the search term 1099Q.
- Click on the Jump to link that appears.
- On the Form 1099-Q Summary screen, click Delete beside the form.
- Click Done at the bottom of the screen.
If all of your distribution was not used for qualifying education expenses, you either can remove the form, as described above, and amend your return once the program has been updated or you can wait to file until the updates are made. It is not known at this time when those updates will be ready -but we don't expect that it will be much longer.
