Is my filing status head of household?
I am recently divorced and was unsure of my filing status so I took the IRS filing status test and it determined that I was head of household. But I am not sure if I answered the following question correctly:
"did you pay more than half the cost keeping up a home in which you lived".
What is considered a "home" in which I lived?
In 2019, my 17 year old daughter (who is my dependent) and I moved around a bit. We rented a room from my father for a few months, then from my mother for a few months, and then we rented a basement apartment/room from a friend for 2 months. Are these rooms/basement apartments I rented considered "a home in which I lived"?
What is considered "keeping up half the cost"?
I did not own the homes or pay half of the cost of the main homes in which we stayed (the owners of the homes did that), I solely paid the rent (and provided food, some furniture, bedding, and other necessities) for the single rooms/apartment in which we lived.
I answered yes, that I did pay more than half the cost keeping up a home in which I lived. Was I correct? Is head of household my correct filing status?
