Get your taxes done using TurboTax
User KurtL1 outlined the many tax benefits that may apply when you have a dependent included on your tax return.
The best way to see if it makes a difference would be to enter all of your information into your return without including your dependent. Write down your results for both your Federal and state returns.
Then, go back to the Federal return and enter information for your dependent. Start by visiting My Info (on the left side of the TurboTax Online screen). Be sure to go back through your return so that any credits related to your dependent can be calculated. Also, be sure to revisit your state return because there may be some dependent-related benefits there as well.
Compare the final results to your initial results without your dependent and decide which option is best.
If you decide not to include your dependent on your tax return, go to the My Info section of your return to delete the dependent's information.
