Get your taxes done using TurboTax

If you received a 1098-T in 2015 for classes that started after January of 2016, you can claim that expense (and other related education expenses) this year 2016 as long as you paid them in 2016.

You can also use it to offset any scholarships or grants you may have gotten.

Schools often bill for the upcoming classes starting in January of the next year in December, which is confusing.

You'll want to click on:

  • Federal Taxes
  • Deductions & Credits
  • Education
You will enter the tuition from your 2015 1098-T if it was for classes that you paid for in 2016,
but do not enter it as a 1098-T in TurboTax. Use the "Exception" for not having a 2016 1098-T because it the information was reported on the 1098-T from 2015.

Make sure you keep records.
