Get your taxes done using TurboTax

That's a complicated question because filing jointly allows special tax breaks that are not allowed on a married filing separate return.  Also many tax breaks are based on income level which means the combined amount can be creating tax breaks or it could be creating more tax depending on the amount of income, deductions or credits.

  • You can open another TurboTax account for "what if" scenarios and do married filing separate for each of you.
  • First enter one, then clear the return and start over to enter the other.
    • You'll have to decide who will claim exemptions for children if applicable.
    • There is a preview function for the 1040 that you can compare
      • My Account > Tools > View Tax summary > Preview My 1040
