An amended return has to be filed on a special form. The federal form is Form 1040X. Each state has its own form. Amended returns cannot be e-filed. You have to print them, sign them, and file them by mail. The federal and state amended returns have to be mailed to different places. It takes the IRS up to 16 weeks to process an amended federal return.
Don't file the amended return until your first return has been accepted and you have received the original refund.
