Get your taxes done using TurboTax
HI. Your company cannot do your taxes without your participation. They would not have enough information to do so. They are required by law to give you a w-2. If they have not yet given one, follow these steps:
Call the IRS for assistance at 800-829-1040. When calling, be ready to give the following information:
- Your name, address and Social Security number.
- Your employer's name, address, city, state, zip code and telephone number, even if your employer has gone out of business.
- Dates of employment.
- An estimate of the wages you earned and the federal income tax withheld. Your estimate should be based on your final pay stub of the year or earnings statement, if available.
The IRS will call the employer and advise them to send you your W-2s.
2. Request or download Form 4506-T. You will receive W-2 transcripts which will have information reported by your employer to the IRS free of charge. Call (800)829-1040 to obtain the form.
3. Request Form 4852 from the IRS or download it and mail it in. Form 4852 is a substitute W-2. You are allowed to estimate your wages based on your final paystub. TurboTax can guide you through filling out Form 4852.
If you do file your taxes using Form 4852, you will have to amend your return once you receive your W-2 or W-2C if amounts on the forms are different from the filed Form 4852.
In the meantime, I would recommend requesting an extension to file. Here is how:
For this tax season, the TurboTax Easy Extension feature will be available to customers in late March. You'll be able to file an extension thru TurboTax by following these steps:
Click on the Federal Taxes tab
Click on the Other Tax Situations subtab
Scroll down to Other Tax Forms
Select File An Extension
The important thing to remember about extensions is that they only extend your time to file the return. If you owe money, then the IRS and states expect you to pay by the normal tax deadline -- there's no extension for paying. So if you're filing an extension and you believe you'll owe, then you'll want to mail a check to the IRS or state.
On the other hand, If you normally receive a refund, and you don't anticipate any change, then you don't need to send payment.
