A qualifying child must meet all of the following:

  1. Be the taxpayer’s son, daughter, stepchild, foster child, brother, sister, stepbrother, stepsister, or a descendant of any of them (e.g., grandchild, niece).
  2. Under age 17 at the end of the year.
  3. The qualifying child did not provide over half of his or her own support for the year.
  4. Lived with the taxpayer for more than half of the year. Exception: The noncustodial parent can claim the child tax credit for a child if the custodial parent released a claim to exemption for the child on Schedule 8332, and the noncustodial parent attached the release to his or her return.
  5. Is claimed as a dependent on the taxpayer’s return.
  6. Does not file a joint return for the year (or files it only as a claim for refund).
  7. Was a U.S. citizen, a U.S. national, or a resident of the U.S.
