Get your taxes done using TurboTax

It depends.  You may claim your son as a Qualifying Child if:

  • He was under 19 at the end of the year, or a full-time student at least 5 months of the year and under 24, or permanently and totally disabled; and
  • He lived with you at least 6 months and 1 day (If in school, he is considered living with you if away at college, since that is a temporary absence)
  • He did not provide at least half of his own support.

You may claim your son as a Qualifying Relative if you cannot claim him as a Qualifying Child (either because of age or residency) if:

  • He earned less than $4050 in reportable income
  • You provide at least half of his support

If he would qualify as your qualifying child except that he did provide at least half of his own support, you will not be able to claim him as a dependent, but you can claim him for Earned Income Credit if you qualify.  Here is IRS information about both a Qualifying Child and a Qualifying Relative.

It TurboTax, list him as a potential dependent, and then answer the questions.  (Remember, if he was away at school, he lives with you).  TurboTax will help determine whether or not you can claim him and for which benefits.
