How recently did you change your last name with the Social Security Administration (SSA)?

At some point prior to the start of tax season, the IRS copies the SSA data base of names and social security numbers. If they did this before your change request arrived at the SSA, then the IRS still has your old name.

Your have several choices

1. Use your old name and re e-file. Just make sure first that your bank will accept a direct deposit or a check with your old name.

2. Print and paper file your return. This will obviously slow up refund processing (if you have a refund; if you owe money, you won't care).

3. Wait a couple of weeks or more and try to re e-file. The IRS likely re-copies the SSA's data base once or twice during tax season so maybe your later e-file will go through.

Unfortunately, the only people who are going to know if the IRS has your new or old name are at the IRS.
