Get your taxes done using TurboTax

Unless you physically work in LA you do not have earned income in LA and would not be required to file that return.  If your employer withheld LA tax by mistake there would be nothing for you to file.

If, however, there has been LA tax withheld by mistake you would file to get a refund.

Filing a Nonresident State Tax Return

Make sure you prepare all nonresident returns before your resident state return, to ensure proper calculations. Also, make sure you select the state long form(s) even if TurboTax selects the short form(s) for you.

Tip: If you are preparing a nonresident state return solely to recover tax that was withheld in error, enter 0 on the screen that asks for the income earned in that state. This will eliminate your tax liability for that state, resulting in a full refund.

If you were not in Louisiana when you earned the wages you do not have to file.
Adjusted Gross Income Line 1 – Wages, salaries, tips, etc. – In the box under the Federal column, print the amount of wages, salaries, tips, etc. from your Federal Form 1040 EZ, Line 1, or Federal Form 1040A, Line 7, or Federal Form 1040, Line 7. Of that Federal amount, print the amount of income earned in Louisiana in the box under the Louisiana column.
