Yes, your information will be saved if you get an extension, or even if you don't. You can pay at any time, but you must pay in order to file, so you can wait until you are ready. You can also pay now and choose not to file yet. I will warn you that your online account for 2016 will not be available shortly after October 16, 2017, which is the last day to file with an extension.
