Please allow me to ask a follow-up question, which is that what will be the process for my case to file tax return?
Both me and my spouse have SSN so we can omit the step of applying for ITIN.
My imagination:
1. Both me and my wife file an extension to IRS before April 15th to extend our tax return deadline to Oct 15th, 2018
2. Once I meet SPT in 2018, I can make first year choice to be treated as Dual-Status alien and declare my NRA spouse to be treated as RA. Afterwards, we choose to file jointly so both of us can be treated as RA.
3. File form 1040 along with all above declarations to IRS for tax return.
So in the above imagination, we will only need to "send sth out" twice, one is for extension and one is for tax return(along with those declaration statements).
Is my imagination right? I mean we do not need to send first-year-choice statement separately, right?
Thank you in advance for your help, I'm sure this question can help lot of people on the same boat!
