Get your taxes done using TurboTax
You're probably thinking
of the educator expense deduction on the federal return.
If you teach kindergarten through grade 12 in a public or private school and you personally pay unreimbursed, out-of-pocket expenses for books, supplies, and other materials you use in the classroom, you can claim a deduction on your federal return for up to $250.
To enter this information in TurboTax, please follow these steps:
- Click on Federal Taxes > Deductions & Credits [In TT Self-Employed: Personal > Deductions & Credits > I'll choose what I work on].
- Scroll down to the Employment Expenses section and click on the Start/Revisit box next to Teacher (Educator) Expenses. [See Screenshot #1, below.]
- On the screen, Teacher Expenses, click the Yes box. [Screenshot #2]
- On the next screen, Teacher Expenses, enter the amount of unreimbursed educator expenses and click Continue. [Screenshot #3]
