Thoughts on An Odd E-file?

Hi,

I recently e-filed a return through another relatively well known online service, and now I'm wondering if if it'd be wise to file for an automatic extension through TT. Maybe I'm being paranoid, but only a minute after getting a "return received" email, I got a "return accepted" message.

Upon checking the site, the timestamp of the acceptance is dead on midnight Central time, which would actually be hours before I filed. Then the state showed as accepted at a perhaps more realistic two and a half hours later. Both acceptances include only a "Submission ID".

Thinking this was slightly strange, I did some searching, and apparently there are a couple of horror stories, accurate or otherwise, of folks getting acceptance notifications but the IRS claiming much later that they didn't receive the filing. Is this even possible? And if we can't entirely trust the process, would it make any sense to do that extension in case there's a problem that takes time to fix? Would the IRS even accept such a filing if they 'did' receive the e-file, or think there could be fraud involved?

Finally, if the payments come out by tomorrow, does this mean the IRS did indeed receive? Presumably with direct debit, the payment info isn't sent separately from the return data?

Okay, set me straight. Thanks!
