Get your taxes done using TurboTax
You do not report your son's income on your tax return.
If your son is under 19 (or under 24 and a full-time college student), you can claim him as a dependent if you provided more than half of his support in 2017.
If he is 19 or older (or 24 or older and a full-time student), you cannot claim him as a dependent if he earned more than $4,050 in 2017.
As a dependent, he is required to file a tax return if his wages are over $6.350. If his wages were less $6,360, he can file a tax return to obtain a refund of taxes withheld. He has to indicate on his return that he can be claimed as a dependent by someone else.
