My wife is in another country and don't have SSN/ITIN. Can I submit the tax return stating my marital status as single?

I cannot apply for ITIN now and at the same time Turbo Tax is not allowing me to submit personal info without ITIN. If I state my marital status as 'single', is it going to be a violation? Please clarify.
