If you receive a Form 1099-MISC for freelance work, IRS requires you to file as self-employed. As they also receive a copy of your Form1099-MISC, they expect to see a Schedule C with your tax return. As the free edition doesn't support the schedule C, you would need to upgrade to TurboTax Deluxe edition to complete your filing, unfortunately.
