Get your taxes done using TurboTax
Yes, TurboTax is correctly following IRS rules by adding your 2025 state tax withholdings and the 2024 state taxes you paid in early 2025 to determine your total state income taxes paid during the 2025 calendar year.
Make sure that your "4th Quarter 2024 payment" made in Jan 2025 was not also included in your 2025 W-2 withholdings.
However, the total State and Local Tax (SALT) deduction reported on line 5a (or 5d) is capped at $40,000 for the 2025 tax year and TurboTax should have applied this.
Line 5d of your Schedule A should be the total state and local taxes paid. This may exceeed $40,000. Line 5e should be the lesser of 5d or $40,000.
If this is not what is shown on your tax return you would have to amend to correct this if your return has already been accepted. If your return has been accepted you will have to wait until your return is fully processed and you have received your return to amend it.
Once your tax return is fully processed, to amend your return using TurboTax Online you will:
- Log in to your TurboTax account.
- At your homepage, look for "Your tax returns & documents" and select the correct tax year.
- The you will select the "Amend (change) return" dropdown and in the dropdown choose "Amend using TurboTax Online".
- Follow your prompts, and select your reason for amending.
- Make your corrections, and make your corrections (add your interest income).
Make sure to review your return before filing and then follow the prompts to e-file or print and mail Form 1040-X to the IRS.
The IRS has a tool to determine if you should amend your tax return that provides some valuable information Should I file an amended return?
You will be able to track your amended return using this link Where's My Amended Return? on IRS.gov.
