Here's how the issue was resolved finally, posting it here as at least one more user had exactly same issue that they couldn't resolve either.
I called Turbotax help - it took the support person about 1.5hrs of screen share &
- trying clearing cache etc. - on effect
- restarting Turbotax - no effect
Finally he gave me a new license key
- I installed the Turbotax all over again (we did it couple of times as the new key wasn't taking effect). Finally I was able to switch license keys from TurboTax top menu.
- After that the online payment went through with no issues, within a min. and I filed taxes.
It is unclear what the original issue or its resolution would've been, without the new license key. The online help person was very helpful, kudos for his support.
On broader feedback to TurboTax - you need to have better error handling. When your tool throws an error, why does it not generate some error file that the user can send to you & you (+ your internal tools to interpret the error file) can directly pinpoint to what the error is and the fix for it. All this can be automated with minimal or no phone call needed. I never had issues with Turbo tax for last at least 11 years, but this is a good feature to have on your tool.
