Get your taxes done using TurboTax
Yes. Trouble may not be the right word, however a tax refund repayment could possibly occur. Under the tax law only one person is eligible to claim another person if the qualifications are met.
- Example: The tax law does not have a give and take, in other words if a parent is eligible to claim a child, even if the parent does not claim the child, the child is not allowed to claim themselves.
If you filed and claimed yourself, then your dad would lose the ability to claim you. Review the rules below for a qualifying child or qualifying relative to see if he is allowed to claim you.
Support portion only:
- Child: If you provided more than half of your own support and you are a full time student below 24 your dad could not claim you.
- Relative: If your dad provided more than half of your support and your are 24 or older he may be entitled to claim you.
