Get your taxes done using TurboTax

Here are some things you may try to get the waiver state statement on your return.

1.  Click the Forms icon in the top right.
2. On the left-hand sidebar, find and open Form 5329-T.
3. Scroll down to Part IX (Exemption from Tax on Excess Accumulation).
4. In the Waiver of Tax Smart Worksheet (the box right above Line 54), look for a small button or text that says "Explanation."
5. QuickZoom: Double-click that button. It will open a separate, full-page worksheet titled "Explanation Statement."Type your waiver explanation here. On Mac, data entered into these sub-worksheets is much more likely to save than text typed into the "Smart Worksheet" boxes on the main form.

Macs have a security feature that can prevent TurboTax from "writing" new data to your tax file if it doesn't have proper permissions, which often causes the "Not Saving" error.

1. Close TurboTax.
2. Go to the Apple Menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security.
3. Select Full Disk Access.
4. Find TurboTax 2025 in the list and toggle it ON. (If it’s not there, click the + and add it from your Applications folder).
5. Relaunch TurboTax and try entering the waiver again.

If you didn't receive a 1099-R for the missed RMD (because you didn't take it yet), TurboTax's internal logic often "breaks" the 5329.

• The Fix: Some users have successfully cleared the error by creating a "dummy" 1099-R with $0 in all boxes except for a small note in the description, then answering the "I missed my RMD" questions in the Step-by-Step interview. This forces the interview to "lock in" the 5329 and its associated explanation.

If you reach the e-file stage and the error persists, the IRS instructions for Form 5329 state that you can attach a separate statement of explanation.

• If the software won't let you e-file because of this error, you may have to Print and Mail your return.
• Attach a physical letter explaining the "Reasonable Cause" for the missed RMD and the corrective action taken.
