Get your taxes done using TurboTax
To summarize what RobertB4444 said, here are the key points of his summation.
- To get a diagnostic copy of your return
- "Go to 'Online' in the upper left corner of your TurboTax program and select 'Send Tax File to Agent'. This will generate a copy of your tax return with all of the personal information removed. You'll get a six digit code and if you share it here it will help us out".
- To file the exclusion, first confirm that your reported income matches what you earned in the combat zone. Mark your W2 as containing foreign-earned income in the followup screen after entering your W2.
- In the foreign earned income section, you’ll see a screen where you can adjust the amount from that W2. Enter a negative number to remove any income not earned in the combat zone, so your total matches what you earned there.
- Next, set the date range as shown in the earlier example—span up to 329 days. This keeps you under the physical presence test, but still lets you exclude all of your income. This will prompt the waiver. In the waiver explanation, enter the actual dates you were in the combat zone and a brief explanation. Here is what should be written.
"I served as a contractor in a designated Combat Zone [insert country] from [Date] to [Date] in support of the U.S. Armed Forces. Claiming exception to the 'abode' rule per IRC Section 911(d)(3) and the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018."
