Do I need to amend my 2024 return due to a Roth recharacterization reported on a 2025 1099-R?
Hi,
I’m trying to confirm whether I need to amend my 2024 tax return.
Here’s my situation:
Early In 2024, I made a $2,500 Roth IRA contribution.
Due to income limits, I later recharacterized this contribution to a Traditional IRA in 2025 when I filed 2024 taxes.
I did NOT deduct this contribution, and I filed Form 8606 for 2024 showing $2,500 of nondeductible basis.
In 2025, Vanguard issued me a Form 1099-R with:
Code R (recharacterization)
Gross distribution: $2,937.47 (original $2,500 plus earnings)
Taxable amount: $0
TurboTax is suggesting that I may need to amend my 2024 return because of this 1099-R.
However:
My 2024 Form 8606 correctly reports the $2,500 basis.
The 1099-R shows $0 taxable and Code R.
No deduction was taken.
Do I actually need to amend my 2024 return in this case, or is my original filing already correct?
Thanks for your help.
