Get your taxes done using TurboTax

Hello @519gayle ,

Great question!

If you child received income from a job,  you are not required to claim that income on your tax return.  If they are your dependent you can still include them on your tax return.    They may need to file a income tax return depending on how much money they made; if they made over the standard deduction ($14,600 for 2024) they are required to file and if they made less than the standard deduction, they are not required to file , but can still  file to claim a refund for any federal or state income taxes they paid during  the year.

There is a not so common exception for unearned income, like investment income, in this case the parent can choose to report that income on their taxes.
