Get your taxes done using TurboTax
Microsoft is not charging to upgrade from a licensed Windows 10 PC to Windows 11 is FREE from Microsoft, provided your PC meets the minimum hardware requirements and is running the latest version of Windows 10. You can check your PC's eligibility by going to Settings and selecting "Check for updates". If your device is ready, you'll see an option to download and install the Windows 11 upgrade.
For the 2025 tax year, TurboTax Desktop will require Windows 11 because Microsoft is ending support for the Windows 10 operating system in October 2025. Intuit, the developer of TurboTax, cites security as a top priority for ending support for the older operating system.
Intuit notified customers of the change by email and on its support website, stating the following:
- Microsoft's end of support: On October 14, 2025, Microsoft will stop providing free software updates, security patches, and technical support for Windows 10.
- Security risks: Intuit says it will no longer support an operating system that doesn't receive security updates from its manufacturer.
- Compatibility with Windows 11: The 2025 version of TurboTax Desktop will only be compatible with the 64-bit version of Windows 11.
