NY State Return Amendment Issue
Hi everyone,
I filed my taxes through TurboTax and expected a $3,000 refund from NY State. But NY ended up auditing my return, made adjustments on their own, and reduced the refund to $1,000 — without me submitting anything. They sent me $1,000 instead of the $3,000 I expected.
Later, I amended my federal return through TurboTax to reflect what NY had changed. But then TurboTax must have told NY I owed them $2,000 — and NY went ahead and took that money from my account.
So here’s where I’m at:
I thought I’d get $3,000
NY said, “Nope, just $1,000”
I amended my federal return
NY took another $2,000
Now I’m effectively down $1,000 overall
Has this happened to anyone else? I honestly don’t know what to do at this point. TurboTax hasn’t been helpful — I can’t get in touch with a real person, and there doesn’t seem to be a clear way to request a refund for the service.
I'm pretty sure TurboTax software is simply not capable of this scenario and I deeply regret using it but I'm stuck with it now. I’d rather switch to a professional like H&R Block or a local CPA, but I’m not even sure how to do that mid-process or if it would help now.
If anyone has advice — or has successfully gotten a refund from TurboTax so I can switch to something that can actually fix my issues — I’d really appreciate your insight. This situation is super uncomfortable and frustrating.
Thanks so much.
