First, how many days were you a New York resident? If you were there for more than half of the year then New York considers you a resident for income tax purposes.
Additionally, for those who are part year residents, New York uses all of your income to figure out what your tax rate would have been if you were a resident, and then charges you that tax rate on the income that you do have taxed by them. Not the nicest way to handle taxes but that is how they do it.
