- There are many things wrong with TurboTax but its not as much of a ripoff as you imply. They do have a free version but it is very limited in its requirements as to who can qualify. Basically just a W2, 1099-div/int that does not require a schedule A or B, and the standard deduction. You can start a free return but if you have any other conditions you would not qualify and be upgraded to a paid version. It looks like that is what happened in your case. With the online version the state is also an additional cost. If you think you were mischarged why did you pay it when you filed? That is when you should have contacted TT and Told them you have a billing issue. Then if you are correct they would have adjusted it or Told you why you are being charged.
