Should I submit 8892 extension when I don't owe gift tax and my 709 has not yet been scanned?
I had sent 709 form on March 31st via USPS certified mail. USPS tracking still shows the original city I sent from.
I did not send another copy and followed up with USPS who informed they cannot confirm whether the envelope is lost or whether it is due to delay in scanning by IRS. I understand that the suggestion is to wait for IRS to find time to scan even if it takes several weeks/months after April 15th.
There were also suggestions to my other posts about sending extension in case the envelope was lost (as USPS tracking is not even showing any transit updates unlike how it used to show in previous years)
Please confirm if you suggest sending form 8892 https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f8892.pdf even though I don't own any gift tax and the purpose of filing 709 is only to declare the gifts made. Or will this confuse IRS and cause unnecessary complications?
If so, I understand from the instructions that this form 8892 also needs to be sent via mail (not online submission) and to the same address. Please confirm if you suggest sending it via first class mail this time or may be UPS /Fedex?
File Form 8892 at the following address.
Department of the Treasury
Internal Revenue Service Center
Kansas City, MO 64999
Thank you so much!
