As for your HSA question, please note that an HSA belongs to an individual, just like an IRA. Thus, if you are going to allocate things to individuals, allocate the HSA contributions and distributions to whichever spouse owned the HSA. 

 

This is true even if one spouse contributed to the other spouse's HSA - the owner of the HSA has to report all contributions to his/her HSA, no matter the source.

 

I would take to heart David's last comment: "For your joint federal return in TurboTax, I would also see what the results are if you file both states jointly.    "
