How to Answer Questions for Dependent CA Form 3800 When Parents Do Not File in CA
My son was a full time student in CA for tax year 2024 and needs to file the 540NR. He is not a resident of CA. I claim him as a dependent on my tax return, and because he has taxable income he files Form 8615 with his federal return. I am a resident in PA, and do not file taxes in CA, but Turbo Tax is asking for information related to my form 540NR in order to complete his CA Form 3800. What do I enter here?
Additional details: He has $12,959 in earned income on his federal return and $19,987 in unearned taxable scholarship income. $6,445 of his earned income is sourced to CA, and $6,514 in FL, which does not have a state income tax. Only $8,115 of his scholarship income was for attending school in the state of CA. The remainder is for attending graduate school in the state of Florida.
