TurboTax allows you to e-file the return despite the presence of the unsigned first-time election statement. All IRS documentation I reviewed clearly states that the first-time election statement must be signed and included with the return. You'd think that it would be easy enough for TurboTax, having generated an otherwise valid first- time election statement based on my interview responses, would prohibit e-filing of a return containing an unsigned first-time election statement and default to the File by Mail option.
