I was able to get the effect I wanted by editing in the form, which is never my first choice. AFAICT there's no other way to the item onto Line 36.
It's not worth it (to me) to get into Inventory for this case (and in particular my start of year and end of year inventory is always $0). My understanding is that Line 36 is intended for exactly this case - that's why I think it has the wording it does - "Purchases less cost of items withdrawn for personal use" - a single line item which incorporates both the overall purchase and the items withdrawn.
