Get your taxes done using TurboTax
Since the income reported on your Form 1099-MISC is not directly for services performed but it is a bonus award, you can use the following steps to report it as other income and not self-employment income.
- On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)
- This opens a box where you can type in “1099-MISC” (be sure to enter exactly as shown here) and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)
- The search results will give you an option to “Jump to 1099-MISC"
- Click on the blue “Jump to 1099-MISC” link
- Enter the information from your 1099-MISC, then click Continue
- Enter a description for the income, then click Continue
- Select None of these apply, then click Continue
- Select No, it did not involve work like my main job, then click Continue
- Select I got it in 2018, then click Continue
- Select No, it didn’t involve an intent to earn money, then click Continue
- This will place the income on line 21 of Schedule 1 under Other Income
