Thank you Maya. I tried what you suggested first but then I understand from many other comments in this group that I will not be able to e file. Also when I do that Turbotax generates a "Joint Occupants" statement but does not attach it/ include it in my return, although that is what line 32 a requires. My friend living with me is not planning to submit a 5695 himself since he paid zero and we're not sure what it would accomplish to file a form for zero cost.
