You do not need to amend the original return if you have not mailed it. You will need to clear and delete the amended return. Follow these steps provided by TurboTax to cancel or undo an amended return:
If you started amending your federal return and would like to cancel the amendment, follow this process:
- Under Do you need to change anything else? Select Never mind, I don't need to amend.
- Alternatively, you can also exit the screen without saving the amendment.
Once you have undone the amended return, you can open the original backup and make the necessary changes. To open the return up, follow these steps:
- Sign in to TurboTax
- Click State
- Click Add a State (you won't add a state; this opens the return for edits)
- Go back and make the necessary changes
