The amount shown in Form 1099-B Box 9 for liquidating distributions is not reported as income as this is usually nontaxable as long as the investor has stock basis. The message you received is intended to remind you to report this as a sale and not dividends.

 

Enter this under Stocks, etc.

  1. Add a new investment, choosing "Other" investment type.
  2. Enter a name like "Gain from Liquidating Dist."
  3. Type: Stock (non-employee)
  4. Purchased it
  5. Description: Stock name
  6. Dates as apply (should be long-term)
  7. Proceeds equal to amount from 1099-B Box 9
  8. Cost/Basis = zero
  9. Review the result of gain from your entries.
