Get your taxes done using TurboTax
You should receive a letter from the IRS with the 14-digit code on it to use to verify your identity. The 14-digit number that the IRS requests on Form 5071C is located on the top right-hand corner of the letter
If the IRS suspects that a tax return that was filed with your name on it is the result of identity theft, they will send you a special letter, called a 5071C Letter.
This letter is sent to inform you that the IRS has a tax return with your name and Social Security number on it that may not be yours.
The letter will ask you to take steps to verify your identity and confirm whether or not the return is actually your return.
When you receive your letter, you will be asked to verify your identity via the ID Verify website or phone system. They will ask you questions that only you can answer correctly.
What you will need for this verification process:
- your previous year’s tax return
- your current year’s tax return
- all supporting forms and schedules
After the verification proves that you are the person that is named on named on the return and that you filed the return, your return will be processed.
Once your return is successfully verified, it will take about 6 weeks to complete processing of your return.
