Get your taxes done using TurboTax
You can use the Free edition for Social Security income (SSA-1099) and RMD income (1099-R). But the Free edition doesn't handle itemized deductions. Property taxes are an itemized deduction, and you have to use the Standard Deduction to use the Free edition.
Go ahead and start your return in the Free edition. If the standard deduction is better for you than itemizing your deductions, you won't need to upgrade.
The federal standard deduction is a fixed dollar amount, based on your filing status and age, that the IRS lets you deduct from your taxable income. Itemizing deductions allows you to list (itemize) your individual deductions on Schedule A. If the Standard Deduction is more than your itemized deductions, you can use the Free edition.
After you've completed the Deductions & Credits section of TurboTax, we'll let you know which deduction gives you the biggest tax break.
