Get your taxes done using TurboTax
It may be that the dividends you reported are not taxable by the state. It could also be that you entered something incorrectly when you entered the 1099-DIV. TurboTax transfers data from your federal return to your state return. Before you begin troubleshooting your state return, go back through your federal return and make sure everything is correct.
After you review your federal return, select the State Taxes tab and review the state section. Pay close attention to the information, especially if you have made changes to your federal return. There might be new sections that need to be completed.
Troubleshooting common federal to state transfer issues
As you go through your entries for the 1099-DIV review your entries, specially for your answers to the questions below:
- Do these uncommon situations apply? Select 'A portion of these dividends are from US Government interest'
- Enter US Government interest - enter the amount from your statement
- Tell us more about your exempt interest dividends - Select 'I earned exempt interest dividends in more than one state'
Note: The reason for these selections is to show the amount that is exempt for your state. TurboTax will carry this information to your state return. There is exempt interest dividends in your account for other states which will be considered taxable by your state.
