You can claim your boyfriend as a dependent if he meets the qualifications of a "qualified relative". A qualified relative does not mean they have to be related to you. The qualified relative would need to meet the four qualifications:
- residency - lived with you the entire year
- income - did not have income exceeding $5,050
- support - provide more than half their support
- status - cannot be claimed as a dependent on someone else's return
