Get your taxes done using TurboTax
Assuming that you're referring to the Motor Vehicle Excise Tax you paid on a vehicle in Massachusetts, you'll need to enter these expenses as Car Registration Fees in the federal section of TurboTax Online. To do this:
- Select Tax Home in the left pane
- On the Hi, let's keep working on your taxes! screen, select the dropdown to the right of the Deductions & Credits
- Select Start, Review/Edit, or Pick up where you left off
- On the Your tax breaks page, scroll down and select the dropdown to the right of Cars and Other Things You Own. If you see that you're currently getting the Standard Deduction, select See all tax breaks, then select the dropdown to the right of Cars and Other Things You Own
- Select Start or Revisit to the right of Car Registration Fees
- Answer Yes on the Did you pay any car registration fees in 2023? Page. If the Hold on, you don't need to enter your Car registration fees screen has generated, select Enter itemized deductions anyway
- Provide all relevant information requested in the interview
See the TurboTax Help article Is my car registration fee deductible? for more information.
If the TurboTax Online navigation suggested above doesn't look like what you're seeing, see the TurboTax Help article Why does the TurboTax navigation menu look different for me?
