To comply with the letter of the law, it would be wise to have a physician issue you a statement that contains the language listed in the IRS notice. That way, you have documentation that you are in compliance with the law when you file your tax return. It is doubtful the IRS would question your assumptions if they were true at the time you made them and they were made in good faith. 

 

I can't be more specific in response to the issues of long, continued and indefinite, as that requires a level of interpretation that I am not qualified to offer.
