To claim head of household you will need to make sure you meet all the requirements set by the IRS. The IRS states, "Generally, to qualify for head of household filing status, you must be able to claim a qualifying child or qualifying relative as a dependent. However, a custodial parent may be eligible to claim head of household filing status based on a child even if the custodial parent released a claim to exemption for the child."
The requirements for head of household are:
- pay over half of the expenses for the household
- be considered unmarried at the end of the tax year
- have a qualifying child or dependent

- Login to TurboTax
- Click the down arrow next to about me
- Click the edit next to about me
- verify interview questions are answered correctly
