It depends on precisely what you mean by "separated." If, on December 31, you were "legally separated under a divorce or separate maintenance decree" then you are treated as not married. That means you can file as single, or as head of household if you meet the requirements. But if you just mean that you were living apart, and you did not have an actual separate maintenance decree, then you were still married. Some states do not have legal separation.
