Are you sure you have went all the way through the 1099-R section?   There are follow-up questions in the retirement section that have to be answered after entering all of your 1099-Rs.   Each 1099-R form has a set of questions, and then there is another group of questions that need to be answered before moving on to the next income type.

After reviewing the document entries, click on Continue (even if the Needs Review still shows) to answer the follow-up questions about disaster distributions.   Usually once those questions are answered, the Needs Review will go away.

You may also try deleting the form and re-entering it if the issue persists.

Carefully review your 1099-R entries to make sure there is no reference to Roth or nondeductible contributions.    Also visit the IRA contribution section and make sure any information entered is correct.

If you don't have any of the situations below, you should NOT need Form 8606.

Use Form 8606 to report:

  • Nondeductible contributions you made to traditional IRAs.
  • Distributions from traditional, SEP, or SIMPLE IRAs, if you have ever made nondeductible contributions to traditional IRAs.
  • Conversions from traditional, SEP, or SIMPLE IRAs to Roth IRAs.
  • Distributions from Roth IRAs.

If it turns out your return does require Form 8606, you will need to wait to e-file until the form has been finalized.
